What is Hypnotherapy

A Path Back to Your Inner Wisdom

At its essence, hypnotherapy is self-hypnosis. It’s not something that’s done to you—it’s a process you actively participate in. The hypnotherapist is simply a guide or facilitator, helping you access a relaxed, focused state where your subconscious mind becomes more open to insight, change, and healing.

Hypnosis is a deeply focused state of mind—one where you gently step away from the “busy mind” and into a space of calm clarity. It’s similar to the mental state you experience during meditation, deep relaxation, or creative flow.

You’ve likely already felt this before: A musician gets lost in the rhythm, a dancer in movement, an artist in creation, an athlete in the “zone.” Even daydreaming or visualization slips us into this natural and powerful state. It’s a space where your mind becomes more open, curious, and receptive—a space where real change can begin.

In this state, we engage the whole mind—not just the analytical part, but the emotional and intuitive aspects too. This is where learning, growth, and healing become deeply integrated. From this space of deep awareness, you can begin to shift old thought patterns, release limiting beliefs, and reconnect with your inner clarity.

The Role of the Hypnotherapist

A hypnotherapist is simply a skilled guide—someone who helps you access this state in a way that feels completely natural and safe to you. Many people, including myself, experience hypnosis as a soothing and peaceful space—a kind of mental exhale.

Hypnotherapy works by communicating therapeutic messages directly to your whole mind. Unlike our analytical thinking, which can sometimes be critical or self-sabotaging, this approach speaks to your deeper wisdom—your full consciousness. At its core, hypnotherapy is self-hypnosis. It’s not about losing control or being “put under”—it’s about gaining deeper access to your own mind. The hypnotherapist simply acts as a guide, helping you enter a relaxed, focused state where your subconscious is more open to insight, healing, and transformation.

In this space, you can begin to untangle limiting beliefs, rewrite old patterns, and reimagine what's possible for you.

What Hypnotherapy Is Not:
  • It's not mind control.

  • It’s not about being “asleep” or unaware.

  • It’s not something done to you—it’s a collaborative process.

You remain in control the entire time. Think of it as learning to speak the language of your own mind—and reclaiming your ability to influence it in powerful, intentional ways.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help:
  • Break free from looping negative thought patterns.

  • Rewire limiting beliefs and internal narratives.

  • Gain clarity, confidence and connect with your intuition,

  • Foster deep emotional healing.

  • Support behavior change from a place of compassion, not force. Quit a Habit. Overcome a Fear.

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

You didn’t come this far to stop

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a transformative approach to personal change, developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler, a mathematician and computer scientist, and John Grinder, a linguist and therapist.

They studied some of the most effective therapists of their time — like Virginia Satir (family therapy), Fritz Perls (Gestalt therapy), and Milton Erickson (hypnotherapy) — to identify the communication patterns that created powerful change. From this research, NLP was born.

At its core, NLP explores how we interpret the world through our mind (neuro), how we express and shape experience through language (linguistic), and how those patterns influence our emotions and behaviours (programming).

How NLP supports women on their journey? At Te Haerenga Therapy, NLP is used as a tool to support in:

Understanding Your Inner World View

NLP helps bring awareness to the unconscious beliefs, thoughts, and behaviours that have been programmed over time — often shaped by trauma, upbringing, society, or intergenerational pain. These patterns may have once protected us, but can now hold us back.

Through gentle and powerful techniques, we can:

  • Identify limiting beliefs like “I’m not enough” or “I don’t have a voice”

  • Recognise emotional triggers and release their hold

  • Shift internal dialogue from self-judgement to self-trust

  • Releasing Emotional Blocks

NLP works with the subconscious mind — the part of us that stores emotional memory and belief systems — to release what no longer serves.

This allows women to:

  • Let go of past pain, fear, or shame

  • Dissolve negative self-talk or sabotaging habits

  • Break cycles of anxiety, people-pleasing, or perfectionism

  • Reprogramming for Empowerment

Once the old patterns are released, we create space to recode the subconscious with new, empowering beliefs. NLP helps you build:

  • A mindset of confidence, clarity, and calm

  • Healthy boundaries and emotional resilience

  • A stronger sense of self, rooted in truth and mana

  • Living in Alignment

NLP isn’t just about changing thoughts — it’s about transforming identity.
As you reconnect with your values and wairua (spirit), you begin to live in alignment with who you truly are — not who you were told to be.

NLP Meets Wairua – A Holistic Approach

At Te Haerenga Therapy, NLP is woven with other modalities like hypnosis, coaching, and mahi wairua (spiritual healing).

This creates deep, layered transformation:

  • NLP heals and empowers the mind

  • Mahi wairua restores and reconnects the spirit

  • Hypnosis speaks directly to the subconscious

  • Coaching guides you into aligned action

You are not broken — you are remembering. You are not the problem - you are the solution.

NLP is one of the tools we use to help you on your journey of self-discovery, release, growth and transformation.
